We’ve all heard that Harley Davidson can do in producing some incredible machines. While 7.9-litres in fuel capacity might seem like much, the Forty-Eight is a model that many Harley fans love. The name comes from the year the manufacturer of motorcycles created its first fuel tank in the shape of a peanut. The design style is still in use now on every Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle.
Loud and low-slung
The Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight has a lovely low-slung, sleek silhouette. The slim front fender is stunning from the front. It’s difficult to overlook the huge front tyre on this bike. We appreciate the classic turn signals, the chrome-ringed headlamp, and an oversized speedometer with a single pod. Harley-Davidson Bikes don’t have an indicator for fuel, however. The Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight features rear-view mirrors positioned beneath the handlebar and growing from the bottom. The grips on the palms are comfortable to hold, and the brake levers feel sturdy. The ignition switch is situated under the steering column of the bike. The switches feel good but take some time to get used to. When you turn to the indicator, it auto-deletes when you turn.
Additionally, you can’t turn the headlamp off in the Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight. The tank for fuel comes with an attractive chrome filler lid. Harley-Davidson bikes don’t forget to incorporate plenty of chrome, twin exhausts and the suspension on the rear is located near the Forty-Eight’s teethed drive belt. Side panels can be located beneath the seat’s thin padding. The right side is equipped with a chrome knob that pops open when you press it, showing it is a dipstick for oil. On the back, there are wide fenders and basic indicators. A pillion chair is only available as an alternative. The bike is beautifully constructed and exudes quality.
Fast and easy
The Forty-Eight is powered by a 1202cc air-cooled, four-stroke V-twin engine. It uses teethed belts to transmit energy to its rear wheel, and the engine is responsive to acceleration inputs. It is paired with the engine the 5-speed transmission, which changes in a one-down, four-up fashion. However, the clutch does have a bit of weight. The bike pulls hard from the lower end of the powerband—the exhausts sounding akin to a typical Harley. We don’t like how hot the engine is felt on the thighs of the rider, particularly when in traffic. The bike is most comfortable when cruising at barely over 100kph. And when you are in the fourth gear, it can hit the speed of 150kph. It isn’t a halt at this stage. The Forty-Eight has a standard frame and suspension in the form of telescopic forks on the front and twin shocks on the rear. The ride, however, is quite stiff, meaning you feel every twitch. The handlebar is long, while the feet pegs placed ahead of the bike don’t provide the ideal riding position as the limbs and arms appear stretched, which can cause a lack of ease during long-distance rides. What is the Harley to purchase?
When you ride straight in a straight line, the Forty-Eight remains fixed to the road. The bike cannot corner well, and the ground clearance gets in the way as you enter the corner. The bike has disc brakes on the rear and front, and the brake levers have an enjoyable feel. The bike has a fuel efficiency of 20 kpl. However, the tank’s capacity could have been larger, which would have increased the mileage for the vehicle. We don’t think this bike is suitable for long distances, but its slim design and low-slung posture are intoxicating. It’s also among the most affordable Harley-Davidson bikes available in India, and, given its heritage, why wouldn’t you want to?
